About Our Region and Us

OUR VINEYARD

Morlet Margaret River Wines are all single vineyard wines, all come from our small boutique vineyard at 205 Clews Rd, Cowaramup.  We are situated at the headwaters of the Willyabrup River at the top of the Willyabrup Valley a couple of kilometres from the first winery in the Margaret River District, Vasse Felix.

Although we do not have a Cellar Door we are available for tastings and purchases on site by appointment (phone or email us), watch out for our advertised open days some long weekends and holidays.  Otherwise you may order wines through this website.

OUR REGION

Cowaramup is located just north of the Margaret River township in the centre of the Region bounded by Cape Naturalist in the north, Cape Leeuwin in the south, the Indian Ocean to the west, and the Leeuwin-Naturalist Ridge in the east.   We are on the eastern edge of the Willyabrup Valley system (216 Wv) rising onto the Cowaramup Uplands system (216 Co).

The Margaret River climate is described as similar to a dry Bordeaux vintage.  The growing season has warm days but the nights are cooled by the strong afternoon sea breeze. Spring temperatures are around 16 to 18°C during the day, and 9 – 11°C at night.  Summer day time temperatures are usually between 25 – 32°C and night time between 12 – 15°C, with an average of 7 days over 35°C.  Autumn day time temperatures range between 20 – 26°C, night time from 11 - 13°C.  Yearly rainfall average 1100 mm, with 980 mm falling between April and October (for more detail see www.weatherzone.com.au).

The viticulture soils in the Wiilyabrup/Cowaramp district are predominately Forest Grove gravelly loam – a yellow brown sandy loam with about 40 – 60% fine pebbly iron stone gravel.  This type is predominant on the Cowaramup Uplands along with some Mungite soils (pale grey sandy clay earths).  In the Willyabrup valleys Keenan soils (friable red/brown loamy earths) are found in the lower slopes closer to the creek line.

Around the region about 45% under vine is on Forest Grove soils, 21% on Mugite, and 9% is on Keenan.  In the north 9% is on Marbrook soils, elsewhere are 15% other soil types.
